若干33歳にして写真家集団マグナム・フォトの会長となったノルウェー生まれの写真家ジョナス・ベンディクセンの写真集『Satellites』。本書は、マグナムのインターンを経てロシアに渡り、フォト・ジャーナリストとして活動を始めた後、旧ソビエト連邦の人々や孤立したコミュニティーを撮影した写真集。表紙の写真は、白い蝶が舞う豊かな自然の中に、衛生ロケットの残骸とそこで遊ぶ子供達が写されていますが、衛生は有毒性が高く地域の汚染を促進する危険物質。一方で、屑鉄ディーラーにとっては貴重な経済資源ともなるため安易に処分ができないもの。そんな複雑な環境下を、ジャーナリズム的な視点と卓越した芸術性で捉えたベンディクセンのファースト写真集です。
